Sixth Grade Program
Sixth Grade Program Overview
Sixth graders at West Craven Middle School take core classes in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Healthful Living. In addition, students explore a variety of electives through an exploratory wheel, which may include AVID, art, STEM, and more.
Language Arts:
Students build skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They read a mix of fiction, poetry, and informational texts, learning to analyze and discuss what they read. Writing includes stories, essays, and research projects.
Mathematics:
The math program focuses on important concepts like ratios, fractions, equations, geometry, and statistics. Students develop problem-solving skills and learn how to apply math in real-world situations.
Science:
Students explore earth and space science, plants, ecosystems, energy, waves, and matter. Hands-on investigations help them understand how science connects to everyday life.
Social Studies:
Sixth graders study world geography and history, learning about ancient civilizations, cultures, and how societies have changed over time. They build skills to analyze historical themes and connections across regions.
Healthful Living:
This includes both health education and physical activity. Students learn about nutrition, exercise, healthy choices, stress management, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Parents can review the health curriculum and request exemptions for specific topics, if needed.
